The Two Biggest Lessons I Learned from Marie Kondo’s “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” + Giveaway!

For Christmas, I used some gift money to buy two books that I have been dying to read: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing and, Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.

Like so many, I am constantly battling clutter- a thorn in our sides that always returns, making tidying and cleaning a losing battle. So it gets left until the pile of clothes on the floor is as tall as the bed, and there are no more dishes available to use. And you dream about the pristine spaces on Pinterest, the ones that are different shades of white and cream with black accents, wondering how they stay so white and uncluttered.

This is your answer. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up teaches you how to, once and for all, tidy your space so you never have clutter again. How is this done? By only keeping items that “spark joy” and giving each one it’s own specific spot in your space. In Spark Joy, you learn the specifics around how to attack each space of your home, how to fold, and how to store specific items.

I am not going to give a full review of the books, as many have already done, but I do want to share two big lessons I learned from reading them and putting the teachings into practice.

 

  1. Surrounding yourself with only things you love or, "spark joy” literally sparks joy
    • Before reading the books, when I would look around my apartment, I would think about all the things I needed to make it a prettier space. However, after my first few sessions of purging and organizing a la KonMari method, I noticed that I loved my apartment again. Everywhere I looked, I saw beautifully organized spaces filled with items that I loved, or were useful to me.
    • Kondo puts a lot of emphasis on how you treat your items, especially when folding your clothes, and thinking of storage solutions. She stresses the importance of giving each item it’s designated space, folding it into it’s ideal dimensions, and not squishing it under or beside other things. When I first read this, I thought, “Who cares, it’s a sock drawer”. But now, every time I open my sock drawer or my closet or my cupboards I get a sense of excitement at the  organized beauty. Being able to see each item and not having to move other things to get at them makes putting them back a no-brainer.
  2. The law of intention and attraction
    • The power of intention has been proven. Just read The Intention Experiment by Lynne McTaggart. By putting your intention on clarity, order and beauty, you attract it into your life.
    • As well, once you have your space cleaned up, you are free to focus on other things in your life. It seems obvious but you don't realize how much clutter in your space clutters your brain. Tip: Ever notice how the presence of words in your space will also clutter your brain? You can't look at words and not read them. If you've organized a space and it still feels cluttered, see if there are any big words or logos staring at you.
